World Travel

Rock and Lindsay's
Overview of Lessons Learned from a Year Off Traveling

We live on a planet with an abundance of wealth.
Most of it seems to be in the Western “developed’ countries right now. However, I’ve found that living in a “developed’ country doesn’t guarantee one’s happiness or a good life. In fact, I think people with less often worry less and have happier lives. It’s up to you, rich or poor, to make the best of your life.

People are the same everywhere
A taxi driver in Cairo will try to rip you off the same way a taxi driver in Paris will. At the same time, a stranger in Jordan will invite you in for tea and a stranger in Australia will offer you a ride when you’re lost. There are good people are there are bad people in every country.

The planet is bigger than you might think.
When people say it’s a small world, they obviously haven’t walked around it. However, after the trip, I do feel less like a Canadian and more like an Earthling. The Earth is one community. Borders are imaginary. But sadly, I think it would take a massive threat, like an alien attack, to bring us all together.

If you’re bored, you’re boring and it’s your fault.
Getting there is half the fun. Face it kids, life is alot of “getting there’. Might as well enjoy it. You make your own fun. You’re in charge.

A large percentage of the planet doesn’t have enough to eat.
This could explain why they’re thin and dying of hunger. Most of us, on the other hand, are getting fat and lazy. We need to learn how to share more.

You could have died 100 deaths by now but you haven’t.
Be thankful for the opportunity that your life provides you and use it! Don’t let fear hold you back from realizing your dreams. You will die. All things pass.

Most young children and animals possess the ability to love openly and unconditionally.
So what happened to us? We were all young once too. They provide us with a wonderful example of how to open up and love. The more love you give, the more love you get.

Your life won’t always work out the way you thought it would.
This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make plans or follow your dreams. Just realize that there are often many ways to achieve the same goal. Relax, be flexible, and roll with it. It will work out. It always does.

People are more important than places or things.
You could be in a beautiful tropical paradise surrounded by assholes and have the worst time of your life. Or, you could be in the middle of the desert with nothing but a few great people and have the best time of your life. Choose your friends and companions wisely.

If you think you won’t find a parking spot, you probably won’t.
The power of positive thinking has been scientifically acknowledged. Professional athletes use it, why don’t you? All actions begin as thoughts, let’s think positively about our lives, each other, and the future. What you believe is what you get.

It ain't about how hard ya hit.
It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.
How much you can take and keep moving forward.
That's how winning is done.
Now if you know what you're worth
then go out and get what you're worth.
But ya gotta be willing to take the hits,
and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him,
or her,
or anybody!
Cowards do that and that ain't you!
 You're better than that!

It takes guts to climb back into that ring
when you know you're gonna take a beating.

What are you made of?

Whenever i feel unjust
i think of those that are less of us

Think of those
starving little kids,
who doesnt even have the energy to cry.

Think of those
who had been through the vietnam war
who has watched their loved ones get burnt by the sorching napalm.
Holding them close, watching their skins peel in front of them.

For me,
i think of my dad,
who has been through the most painful times
but never has he forgotten how to love.

So why not put down that negativity,
grab ahold of yourself and be the best that you can.
Nothing can be too tough
Nothing can kill you.

Force - character design from life drawing

I'm determined to draw constantly from now on
I need to work closer towards my dream.

I throw my thoughts here,
so that i will remember.

Shout out your DREAMS!
- Bobby Chiu

Yongs share with me this guy called bobby chiu.
He talked alot about his inspirations and motivations.

Well, he shared with me that
Always do more, so you will be better than the rest.
Dream big, aim for the moon, even if you fall you'll end up among the stars.
Think about your dream everyday!

He also kept mentioning about intensity
Keep your practices intense!
You cannot do it because its fun or relaxing
It is something you have to make sacrifices for.

And if there is a voice telling you to slack...
Punch it in the face!

An ocean of time ahead of us,
coming along with new challenges.

Day 1

Day2

Day3

Day4

Day5

Day6

Day7

Day8

These can probably summarise my entire trip.
The rest are in my fb liao.
oh nearly forgot
i did write a journal whenever i'm bored
or waiting for something
over there.

110909 Friday 1437hrs

I used to look up into the sky when i was in tekong.
Now that i'm actually above the clouds,
it really brings me a sense of joy.

120909 Saturday 2243hrs
Apparently,
i'm at the domestic airport too damn early.
Wasted! Could've went to the city
or king's park or the casino with francois.
Anyways,
it has been friggin awesome so far.
Endured blistering cold wind,
getting lost and finding my way back,
seeing the world in another point of view.

130909 Sunday 0807hrs local
Here i am,
sitting on a bench outside a grocery store
waiting for my bro.
This is sydney.
I love it.
The weather's so damn great.
There's this guy sitting beside me right now,
he's drunk and trying to talk to me.
I don't understand a shit he says mate.
 On the other hand,
there's this hot girl on my left....
she'll probably think i'm some stupid asian dude
if i ask her for her number.

150909 Tuesday 1652hrs
What to do next?
Past couple of days i've seen too much.
But now, i'm sitting down in macdonals
with about 5 maps on the table.
Whats next?

180909 Friday 2120hrs
This is it.
1 week of adventure is coming to an end.
Time really flies.
Wish i could stay there
and live a life like him.
 Everyday is unpredictable,
 filled with different situations.
I want to be out there,
independent and out of the comfort zone.
Out of the daily routine
which travels in a circle,
 back at home in singapore.
I get what i mean.

I've learnt stuff i could never have gained in singapore.
saw a differnt side of the world.
Strange people, desperate people, people with aspirations, people without.
All in all, i discovered what i truly want to do with my life.
 Adventure.
I wanna be out there, drifting, travelling constantly,
meeting new people, seeing new stuff.
Working holiday huh.
Thats what my couz did.
Travelling the globe,
working odd jobs to save money for the next trip.
 Pretty wicked.
Oh by the way i'm on the plane back home now.
For the records, i got this incredible seat!
Although the baby's noisy but its all cool.
Alot is going through my mind right now.
I just hope i'll clear the custom smoothly.

Summarise of the trip.

Perth/Day1 > Detained in perth border security > Meet Justin > Check in hotel > Walk ard the city > Dinner at cafe > Meet francois > Supper at restaurant > Cab to his house > Drink, talk cock, watch game > Sleep.

Perth/Day 2 > Breakfast > Packup > spontaneous railway ride > Met Uncle/Aunty > Lunch at their house > Play with dog > Badminton > Hillary's > Cole > Sorrento beach > Wait for next flight.

Sydney/Day3 > Wait for bro > Went to the rocks > Manly island > go home sleep.

Sydney/Day4 > Lunch with friends > Coogee beach > Drink at beach bar > Walk the stretch of coogee > Birthday celebration at victor's and Mitch's.

SYdney/Day 5 > Darling harbor > Meet bro > Fish market > Start city > Queen victoria building > Circular Quay > Sydney harbor bridge.

Sydney/Day6 > Taronga Zoo > Pizza.

Sydney/Day7 > Blue mountains > Makoto.

Sydney/Day8 > Spend time with bro > Pack up and go home.

Could've done alot more things.
Alot of unforseen unprecedented complications.
But i learnt many things about travelling alone.
I'm going to backpack europe before 25,
North America before 29.
But before that,
i need to buy a proper backpacker's bag.
Can't possible carry my army fieldpack walking around like that again.
I have to establish myself soon,
get the right skills
and then i can enter the top animation industry.

Its good to think far.
But first, i'm going to be stuck in army for another 1 year 8 months.

Officer Cadet School
An ocean of time ahead of us
coming along with new challenges
give them to me.
