Overview of Lessons Learned from a Year Off Traveling
We live on a planet with an abundance of wealth.
Most of it seems to be in the Western “developed’ countries right now. However, I’ve found that living in a “developed’ country doesn’t guarantee one’s happiness or a good life. In fact, I think people with less often worry less and have happier lives. It’s up to you, rich or poor, to make the best of your life.
People are the same everywhere
A taxi driver in Cairo will try to rip you off the same way a taxi driver in Paris will. At the same time, a stranger in Jordan will invite you in for tea and a stranger in Australia will offer you a ride when you’re lost. There are good people are there are bad people in every country.
The planet is bigger than you might think.
When people say it’s a small world, they obviously haven’t walked around it. However, after the trip, I do feel less like a Canadian and more like an Earthling. The Earth is one community. Borders are imaginary. But sadly, I think it would take a massive threat, like an alien attack, to bring us all together.
If you’re bored, you’re boring and it’s your fault.
Getting there is half the fun. Face it kids, life is alot of “getting there’. Might as well enjoy it. You make your own fun. You’re in charge.
A large percentage of the planet doesn’t have enough to eat.
This could explain why they’re thin and dying of hunger. Most of us, on the other hand, are getting fat and lazy. We need to learn how to share more.
You could have died 100 deaths by now but you haven’t.
Be thankful for the opportunity that your life provides you and use it! Don’t let fear hold you back from realizing your dreams. You will die. All things pass.
Most young children and animals possess the ability to love openly and unconditionally.
So what happened to us? We were all young once too. They provide us with a wonderful example of how to open up and love. The more love you give, the more love you get.
Your life won’t always work out the way you thought it would.
This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make plans or follow your dreams. Just realize that there are often many ways to achieve the same goal. Relax, be flexible, and roll with it. It will work out. It always does.
People are more important than places or things.
You could be in a beautiful tropical paradise surrounded by assholes and have the worst time of your life. Or, you could be in the middle of the desert with nothing but a few great people and have the best time of your life. Choose your friends and companions wisely.
If you think you won’t find a parking spot, you probably won’t.
The power of positive thinking has been scientifically acknowledged. Professional athletes use it, why don’t you? All actions begin as thoughts, let’s think positively about our lives, each other, and the future. What you believe is what you get.
